Chicken Pox Update

New Chickenpox Requirement

Legislation has added a chickenpox requirement to the California School Immunization Law.  Effective July 1, 2001, children entering kindergarten must show proof of a chickenpox immunization or disease history. If a child has already had chickenpox,a physician may indicate it on the child's Immunization Record. Health care providers will consider clinical diagnosis, laboratory tests or parent history as evidence of past disease.

Hepatitis Update

Immunization Reminder

Under a new state law that took effect on July 1, 1999, students cannot enter, advance to or repeat the 7th grade if they have not received the hepatitis vaccine and a second MMR (measles).  The hepatitis vaccine is given in a series of three doses over a six-month period.  Those students who have not received their second measles or began the hepatitis series will be excluded from school.  Documentation of immunization is required.

We would like to encourage you to get an early start on your child's immunization.  Any child in grades K-6 who is in need of the hepatitis series or a second measles can be immunized now.  Please contact your doctor or health care facility to start the vaccine series.  (Remember this series will take 4 to 6 months to complete.)  This will ensure that your child is properly immunized by the time he/she reaches the 7th grade.

Most health care plans cover the cost for these vaccines.  The San Bernardino County Health Department in Ontario and on Arrow Route and the Urgent Care facility at Archibald Baseline both located in Rancho Cucamonga offer free immunizations to those who qualify.

If you need additional information, please contact your school site or call your district school nurse at 484-2703.

Kindergarten Health Requirements

At registration, the following documentation must be presented to our office staff:

  1. Immunization records provided by a physician or public health agency with a physician's or nurse's signature.
  2. Health Examination dated and signed by a physician.

To meet the requirements of the State of California, immunizations must be current in order to begin Kindergarten.  The following are a list of immunizations that all students must have before a registration can be completed.

    1. Polio-at least 3 immunizations with the latest being administered after the 4th birthday

    2. DPT-at least 4 immunizations with the latest being administered after the 4th birthday

    3. MMR-at least 2 immunizations administered on or after the 1st birthday

    4. HepatitisB-3 immunizations administered at medically approved intervals

     5. Varicella (chickenpox) immunization or health care provider documentation of chickenpox disease or immunity

Central School District requires a written physician's report of school physical examination to be on file in the school office before entry into Kindergarten.  The examination must have occurred within the six months prior to entering Kindergarten and must be signed and dated by a physician.  Health examinations may be obtained from your family physician or a Public Health Department Clinic.

The school office has information available for low cost physicals and immunizations.  For assistance in obtaining Healthy Families Insurance, call 980-3930.  District school nurses are available at 484-2703 for questions or concerns.
